Self Care While Caring for Your Senior Dog

Hello,

Caring for a senior dog is a beautiful act of love — but let’s be honest, it can also be emotionally draining. You're noticing little changes every day, adapting routines, managing medications, watching closely for signs of pain — and loving them more fiercely than ever.

That’s a lot. And it’s okay to admit that.

This week, we want to shift the focus a bit, from your dog to you. Because while your senior dog deserves all the love and comfort in the world, you deserve care, too.

Give Yourself Permission to Feel It All

You might feel sad, overwhelmed, grateful, or even guilty, all within the same hour. These emotions are completely normal when you're walking through the later stages of life with a beloved dog or dealing with a difficult veterinary diagnosis.

Whatever you’re feeling, let it be valid. You’re showing up with love every day, and that matters more than anything.

Finding Moments of Rest and Relief

  • Take small breaks when you can. Let your dog snooze while you enjoy a walk, a quiet coffee, or a few minutes of stillness.

  • Ask for help from friends, family, a pet sitter, or your vet. Veterinary hospice can also be incredibly helpful. You don’t have to carry this alone.

  • Connect with others who understand. There are communities, support groups, and professionals who can offer comfort and guidance.

Focus on the Joy, Too

Yes, aging brings challenges. But there’s still so much beauty in this season. The way your dog leans into you a little more. The slower walks that let you notice more. The quiet companionship that says, we’ve been through a lot together.

These are the golden moments—and they deserve to be savored.

So take care of your heart while you’re caring for theirs. You’re doing an incredible job.

Coming up next week: We’ll be wrapping up this journey with something special — Celebrating Your Senior Dog. We’ll share ways to make the most of your time together and honor the bond you’ve built over the years.
