Puppy Essentials: Socialization Foundations

Are you worried about properly socializing your puppy during the COVID-19 pandemic? Is your puppy still waiting for vaccinations before being able to go out into the big wide world? There's still lots you can do to provide essential socialization and proactive exposure for your puppy.

In this 90-minute small-group session with a certified dog trainer, you'll get tips and tricks to recreate different experiences at home and learn how to safely expose your puppy to the world. Proper socialization during your puppy's imprint period (between roughly 7 to 16 weeks of age) is a MUST, but we understand how hard it can be right now. This workshop will walk you through important socialization exercises to help your puppy grow up to be a well-adjusted and well-behaved adult dog.

Each workshop will be tailored to the lifestyle and needs of each registrant, based on a pre-workshop questionnaire.

Topics include:

  • How to socialize your puppy effectively from a distance
  • Are puppy play groups safe and right for your dog?
  • Beyond meeting people and dogs: The forgotten steps of socialization
  • What to do if your puppy missed early socialization
  • How to tell if your puppy is stressed or fearful, and what to do
  • 100 Things in 100 Days: Proactive Exposure Checklist for Your Puppy

I learned so much, and the instructor truly cares. She went beyond the allotted time to share information with me!

Jenny

Cathy provided several tips to recognize 'threshold' signals so I know WHEN to counter potential 'negative' responses with positive (treat/toy) reinforcement- which is immediately after my puppy 'observes' their potential trigger. And by walking & working with each dog independently, I'll create a stronger bond while working to improve or prevent each puppy's negative response.

This 60-minute online session with a certified dog trainer will give you practical tips you can use right away and answer the questions you submit prior to the workshop. Our dog trainer will help you troubleshoot your potty training problems and show you real-world techniques to accelerate your puppy's house training.

Each workshop will be tailored to the issues that are most important to registrants based on a pre-workshop questionnaire.

Topics include:

  • How long does potty training take?
  • How to stop potty accidents
  • How do you potty train your puppy when you live in an apartment?
  • Does bell training work for house training?
  • How do you potty train your puppy at night?
  • Should you use pee pads with your puppy?
  • How do you set up a successful potty training schedule?

"I attended the training session to help curb the multiple accidents a day in the home and learn a few tips and tricks along the way. In less than a week post-training, my puppy had not had an accident in the house and it’s been three weeks since he has had a house potty accident. One of the best tools I learned was having him ring a bell attached to the door knob at the back door. It worked like a charm and I now know when he needs to go out! Great training and a great value!"

Cathy Madson
MA, CBCC-KA, CPDT-KA, FFCP

Cathy became a certified dog trainer in 2008, but she likes to think that her career began when she was six years old and a stray wandered into her yard and became her first dog companion. As a trainer, Cathy believes that it's all about helping people learn how to better communicate with their dogs. Understanding the why behind certain behaviors and issues helps inform an effective training and behavior modification plan.

Cathy focuses on helping humans and their pets build a strong relationship based on trust and the use of force-free positive reinforcement training methods. Her experience working with dogs in shelters, dog daycare, and in companion dog training has given her opportunity to work with hundreds of dogs and on a wide variety of behavioral challenges. Her specialties include canine separation anxiety, leash reactivity, and dog aggression.

Beyond her certification as a Professional Dog Trainer and Canine Behavior Consultant, Cathy is also Fear Free Certified, a member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers, The Pet Professional Guild, and the Dog Writer's Association of America.

She currently shares her life with two Cardigan Welsh Corgis, Sookie and Fozzie Bear.

"Milo continues to have his puppy meltdowns - once in AM and once in PM. We are continuing with the redirecting techniques you described and have had considerable improvement. We will need to continue to use his crate when his nipping is not able to be redirected and we can noticeably tell he is way overstimulated.

Having the Yappy Hour program was such a relief! It was an opportunity to identify with other puppy parents and not feel all alone during isolation. We are grateful that we have this knowledge to help us better cope with the trying times."
